Discover the police: how to react and whether to let the authorities into the house

Many people get scared when they hear the words "Open up, police!" for no apparent reason. There are several reasons that will prompt authorities to urgently check you and your home.

Why did they come if no one called

Just because you didn’t call the police doesn’t mean that the policeman cannot pay you a visit. Usually the motives are as follows:

  • neighbors complained about the noise;
  • the management company, together with the police, checks for unregistered tenants;
  • you let the dog go for a walk without a leash;
  • damage to common property.

In addition to "frivolous" reasons for visiting, there may be more significant ones, for example, the initiation of a criminal case against you.

What to do if someone came to you

First you need to ask the policeman to introduce himself. Without opening the door, rewrite the details of his official ID.

Then ask the visitor to wait. Call your friends and acquaintances and report the incident. You should slowly dictate the name, surname and patronymic of the employee, his title and position.

Then continue the conversation and ask politely about the purpose of the visit. If the answer seems convincing, you can let the policeman go home. However, never give in to pressure from him.

What happens if you don't open the door

There are several cases where law enforcement officers can enter a home without the owner's consent:

  • to ensure the safety of citizens, including during the period of mass disorders;
  • to prevent the commission of a crime;
  • if persons suspected of a crime are hiding in a dwelling;
  • inspect the room where an extraordinary incident with serious consequences occurred.

If the reason for the arrival of the police is not related to one of these options, you have the right to deny entry without any problems.

They demand to open the door, but they do not say why

It happens that a police officer refuses to explain the reason for his visit, but continues to insist on entering.

You have the right to call 112 or to the duty station and report the incident.

Sometimes a visitor, smiling politely, says that he wants to be “friends” and offers to talk about neighbors or on some other topic.

It would be correct to ask for a summons with a specific date of the conversation and its reason. You can also make an appointment at the police station.
