Why you can't wash dishes at a party

Perhaps you would not mind helping the hosts with washing dishes after a party at a party, but they strongly insist that you sit still. And they explain their behavior by superstition - they say, it is not accepted that way, and it is not necessary. But like any other sign, this one has origins and its own rationale.

Why is it considered that washing dishes at a party is not good

Like many other signs, this one was formed due to the fictional connection of similar phenomena. In many cultures, water is considered (and deservedly) a carrier of information, which means it is a very “magical” object. Using water in your home, and even washing food off the plates with its help, the guest “washes away” happiness, prosperity and good luck from your family. Of course not intentionally. It turns out that superstition originated from the belief in the mystical power of water to move energy flows and from the play on words ("washing" plates - "washing out" luck). True, why the same guest can, for example, just wash their hands - remains a mystery. The formation of superstitions is very unpredictable.

Superstition likely originated, like so many others, between the tenth and fifteenth centuries.

Objective reasons

There are a couple of quite objective reasons that have nothing to do with omens and superstitions. The first is etiquette. While visiting, you gratefully accept the care of the owners of the house. If you offer them help with cleaning, they may feel embarrassed. However, after a friendly get-together, such an offer will sound quite reasonable and adequate.

Another problem that a person who decides to wash someone else's dishes may face is the unusual “working conditions”. And since plates and cups are very fragile objects, the risk of breaking something increases a couple of times compared to a home sink. Perhaps the owners ask you not to help only out of fear for their expensive service, which they took out of the sideboard solely for your visit.

And the last reason to mention is the mess in the kitchen. If you dined with the whole company in the living room or dining room, then perhaps the kitchen is a little messy after cooking, and the owners are simply embarrassed to let you in there.

The kitchen might be a little messy, and that would be a good reason not to let you in.

It doesn't matter how superstitious you or the owners of the house are. Don't forget about simple, good manners. If you are asked for help, do not refuse it. And if the owners insist that they can do the washing themselves, don't push them.
