Common Sense or Plyushkin's Syndrome: Why You Can't Throw Old Things

And now you are looking at a huge pile of unnecessary trash that has accumulated in the closet … What to do with all this? The logical answer is to just throw it away. But from the point of view of superstition, not everything is so simple.

Why it is believed that old things should not be thrown away

Adherents of superstition and will unanimously tell you that old things contain your energy. And this means that by throwing them away, you run the risk of being damned, losing your luck; you can be jinxed, taken under control or simply caused by some evil sorcerers. Apparently, black magicians are constantly hanging around in the trash heaps in search of personal belongings of unsuspecting people.

Another reason not to throw things away is the feeling of regret when parting with them. In principle, this cannot be called a superstitious or supernatural reason - after all, feelings of regret really negatively affect mood. However, everyday esotericists claim that in addition to this, pity when parting with a thing takes a notable piece of your energy, through which then your strength will gradually flow away.

Why you shouldn't really throw things away

Rational reasons for not throwing things away are very vague and not appropriate for every occasion. Throwing away an unnecessary thing is not worth it only in two cases: if you really do not want to part with it (that is, you will feel regret), or if you can give it to another person who needs it.

But if you constantly follow the lead of your sentimental attachment to old, unnecessary or completely broken things, you can turn into a real hoarder, whose pantry and loggia are crammed with all kinds of rubbish. Therefore, it is worth learning how to get rid of unnecessary items in your environment.

This approach will lead to the fact that there will be a lot of junk that no one needs, but it's a pity to throw it away

How to get rid of unnecessary things

First, you need to decide which things really have emotional value for you and which do not. Of course, you don’t use your mother’s old wedding dress or prom photo album every day, but it would be extremely unwise to throw them away. But here are tons of old rags, from which you will surely make a new beautiful outfit someday, glass seaming jars that you can’t reach for everything, a broken chair that you are not going to fix in any way - all this absolutely definitely needs to be eliminated. But you don't have to throw it away.

Clothes of acceptable quality can always be returned to second-hand (you will also be paid money for it, albeit small), to a fund for helping the poor, to a "shelter" for the homeless, to a local church. If there are no such organizations in your city, then take a closer look at your friends and their families. Perhaps one of them is wearing the same size and will be ready to accept a gift from your wardrobe.

You can also try to distribute various household items (functioning, of course) to friends, relatives or sell them on services like Avito or Yula. If, in your opinion, the item is worthless, you can give it away for next to nothing. Foundations to help low-income families will also gladly accept such donations.

There is usually no point in giving out broken things - it's easier to throw them away. But if we are talking about some old chest of drawers from the 40s, then you can look in the city for an antique dealer-restorer who will be happy to rid you of this thing.

You can do the same with broken jewelry, unnecessary figurines and paintings.

Books that you do not read, too, can not rush to throw away. Try to take them to the library, to the reading society of your city, to the school (if they are suitable for the age limit). In extreme cases, you can hand them over to a recycling center as waste paper.

To accumulate unnecessary things around you is not only useless, but also harmful. Get rid of them in a timely manner, distributing them to those who will benefit the most from them.
