How longest sleep competitions are held: records and championships
As an important part of life, sleep invariably fuels the interest of researchers and experimenters. It is not surprising that in pursuit of studying the features of this process, its effect on the body, dry methods of experiments, observations, and interesting formats - competitions and contests are used.
Sleep to win
The upholding of the traditional values of Spain was the reason for the emergence of a kind of competition for daytime sleep. The love for siesta fueled the interest of researchers and activists who advocate the preservation of the national culture, therefore, from October 14 to 23, 2010, it was decided to hold the first such event. Despite the fears of the organizers that potential participants would be afraid to look stupid, about 50 people took part in the experiment every day.
The championship was held in the area of Madrid Carabanchel, in TC "Islazul". Every day there were 8 rounds of 20 minutes. The main task of the athletes was to fall asleep quickly and sleep as long as possible. The actual transition to rest was confirmed by the doctor using a heart rate monitor. In the course of the competition, the participants were assessed according to the total duration of sleep, appearance, posture, presence and volume of snoring. The "king of the siesta" this time was Pedro Lopez, 62-year-old Ecuadorian, who slept for 17 minutes out of 20 and was noted by loud snoring - 70 dB. The winner received 1 thousand euros.

Noise to a student is not a hindrance
The relay was accepted in Seoul, where the Korean Siesta Championship was held for students actively preparing for the upcoming exams. The goal of the competition was to find out who sleeps the best. While the participants were resting, the observers created noise interference, gradually increasing their power. Whoever woke up dropped out of the game. The winner was Han Hye Min, who was not awakened by anything, and she received a symbolic $ 46. By the way, all the "athletes" were satisfied with the event, as they were able to recuperate after exhausting nights before passing the tests.
Sleepy marketing
The idea of such a competition took root in the world and attracted the interest of businessmen. As part of advertising campaigns, competitions for the sweetest and longest sleep were held in Dubai and Irkutsk. In the first case, the winner was promised a comfortable bed, and in the second, orthopedic mattresses and smart pillows. The record holder of the Irkutsk championship was 33-year-old Sergei Khankhunov, having slept for 20.5 hours.
Sleep records
The incredible advances in this area have become possible thanks to such a phenomenon as lethargic sleep, which is characterized by prolonged immobility of the sleeping person. His eyes are closed, the work of organs and systems slows down so much that the sleeper is confused with the deceased. At the same time, people who emerged from lethargy often noted that consciousness remained with them, but they could not react in any way to what was happening around them.
Three record holders stand out in this direction:
- Anna Svenpool spent 31 years in a lethargic sleep, plunging into it after the death of her groom. Despite the skeptical attitude of doctors, the woman woke up in full health when she turned 50.
- Norwegian Augustine Legard reluctantly devoted 22 years to this state, having lost control of her body and mind after giving birth.
- Nadezhda Lebedina, a native of the Dnipropetrovsk region, fell into lethargy after a family conflict and did not wake up for 20 years. During this time, her husband and mother managed to die, and the five-year-old daughter ended up in an orphanage.
My personal record for sleep duration: 56 hours. Before that, I had to work hard physically and intellectually for two days. Despite such a long rest, the awakening did not give the desired relief: I felt overwhelmed and depressed, which is largely due to work on the verge of strength and possibilities. If you are faced with such moments in life and often fall asleep without regaining consciousness for more than a day, you should think about revising the regime. In addition, prolonged sleep, exceeding these limits, can be a signal of emotional burnout and depression.

Sleep competitions are often organized by researchers to study the peculiarities of this phenomenon: it is easier to collect important information in a playful way. Ideas like this inspire record breakers and businessmen to carry out unusual sleepy actions and experiments.
