Wood sawdust is an environmentally friendly organic material. Simple ways to use sawdust on your garden plot will help you care for your soil and plants.

Soil improvement

Wood shavings are ideal for indoor use. When combined with manure or plant residues, the speed of sawdust overheating increases. Such organic raw material warms up the soil better. It becomes lightweight, loose, breathable and permeable. This promotes rapid and efficient uptake of nutrients by plants.

Wood waste is brought into greenhouses and greenhouses in autumn and spring. For optimal results in the fall, a layer of hay, straw, dry grass, leaves and organic waste from the kitchen is laid out on the beds.

In the spring, add a layer of fresh manure, sprinkle with fresh shavings. Then the manure is mixed with organic residues. Cover with a thin ball of hay, straw or dry grass, lay a layer of soil with the addition of mineral fertilizers. The soil obtained by overheating has an elevated temperature and creates favorable conditions for early planting of plants in greenhouses.

Additive to compost

There are several ways to add wood shavings to compost. A simple way is to mix vegetable waste, bird droppings, cow or horse manure, sawdust, and straw. You will receive quality fertilizer in 2-3 months.

A more laborious method is storing sawdust in a silo pit about one meter deep, on top of which a layer of wood ash and lime is poured. The ratio is 80:20. Decay lasts about two years. Compost is perfect for non-acidic soils.

Shelter for plants

Many fruit trees and flowers need insulation for the winter. Young plants are insulated like this: dry shavings are stuffed into large bags, which are tightly tied so that air remains inside and moisture does not penetrate. They are laid over the trunks of trees and fixed.

Shrub plants, roses, peonies, as well as the vine are insulated in the following way. A box is hammered around the shoot, dry sawdust is poured into it. It is important to isolate such a structure from precipitation.

Mulching

Rotten sawdust is ideal for mulching the soil for berry crops.

In May-June, wood shavings are laid out in a layer of about 5 cm. The sawdust is completely re-peeled by September-October. If mulched later, the unripe shavings will retain moisture during the rainy season, which will adversely affect the wintering of plants.

With the help of sawdust, you can quickly and inexpensively cover the paths in the country, as well as the aisles. The paths are convenient for moving around the garden, even after rains. This method will help to get rid of perennial weeds, since the compressed shavings will block the access of sunlight to the plants. The next year sawdust paths will be a good organic fertilizing on the site.
