Metal tile is a modern, beautiful, strong and durable roofing material. To accurately calculate the amount of metal tile you need, you need to know the dimensions of the sheet: length, width, thickness. In addition, you must have information about the weight of your roof. This will make it possible to properly equip the rafter system and other roof elements.

Sizes of sheet metal

The main parameters of a sheet of metal tile are: length, width, thickness, profile height and step of its wave.

Sheet length and width

Distinguish between full and useful length and width of the sheet. Overall length and width is the distance between the edges of the sheet. The length can be varied from 480 mm to 6000 mm. You should not choose extreme values. A long sheet is capable of covering a large area, but it is very heavy and may deform when lifted. When choosing a short sheet, due to its short length, the number of joints increases, and, consequently, overlaps, which increases the amount of material required. The best length for mounting is 3600–4500 mm. The width of the metal tile sheet ranges from 1140 to 1190 mm.

The effective length and width of the sheet is the total size minus the dimensions of the overlap of the sheets during installation. The overlap is 45–150 mm in length and 5–90 mm in width.

Sheet thickness and wave height

The standard sheet thickness of metal tiles is 0.35–1 mm. The most common is 0.5 mm. A thicker metal tile is stronger, has a longer service life, but creates a greater load on the rafter system and load-bearing walls. If the load is high, then it is necessary to strengthen the walls and rafters. Thin metal tiles are cheaper, but they can deform during installation, transportation and under the influence of various natural factors. It also rusts quickly and is less durable.

The step of the metal tile is the distance between two adjacent depressions or ridges of the sheet. It is equal to approximately 185 mm. The height of the wave differs depending on the quality of the metal tile. Higher quality and more expensive ones have a wavelength of 50–75 mm, an average level - from 30 mm to 50 mm, budget options - from 12 mm to 30 mm. A higher wave contributes to good water flow from the roof during heavy rain and melting snow, and also gives the metal tile an attractive appearance.

Calculation of metal tiles for roofing

To calculate the number of sheets of metal tiles required for the roof, we recommend the following procedure:

  1. We calculate the roof area.
  2. The total area is multiplied by a factor of 1.1. This is necessary to take into account overhangs, waste and the possibility of damage to sheets during transportation and installation.
  3. The resulting value is divided by the effective sheet area.

We will make the calculation using the example of a conventional gable roof.

Gable roof
Gable roof

The gable roof allows you to demonstrate the calculation of the metal tile required for the roof

The slopes of such a roof are rectangles in shape. The area of a rectangle is equal to the product of its length and width. Let this area be 120 sq. m. Multiply this value by 1.1. We get 132 sq. m. Since there are two slopes, 132 sq. m multiply by two. It will be 264 sq. m.

We will calculate the area of a sheet of metal tile using the example of Metalloprofil products (see the table above). One of the options for the length of the sheet - 3650 mm. The overlap is 150 mm. Usable length 3500 mm (3.5 m). The total width of this sheet is 1190 mm. The overlap is 90 mm. Useful width - 1100 mm (1.1 m). It follows that the useful area of the sheet is 3.85 sq. m (3.5 mx 1.1 m). To calculate the number of required sheets of metal tiles, we divide the roof area with a coefficient (264 sq. M) by the useful area of the sheet (3.85 sq. M). Rounding up we get 69 sheets.

To calculate the required number of sheets of other sizes and for different types of roofs, you can use the online calculator.

Metal roofing weight

Knowing the weight of the roof is very important when installing it. The load-bearing walls and the rafter system must be able to withstand the load placed on them. It is necessary to take into account the mass of not only the roof, but also the entire roofing cake: insulation, hydro and vapor barrier.

Weight per square meter of metal tile

One of the most important indicators is the weight of 1 sq. m roof. There are a number of factors that determine this. The dimensions of the sheet and the thickness of the metal have already been mentioned above. Naturally, the larger the sheet and the thicker the metal, the greater the weight of the sheet. Other factors include:

  • metal composition. Steel is mainly used, but sometimes copper, its alloys and aluminum are used for high-quality types of metal tiles. The weight per square meter of galvanized steel with a thickness of 0.5 mm is approximately 3.84 kg and depends on the thickness of the zinc. The rest falls on the primer and polymer coating. If the thickness of these layers is 0.7 mm, then the weight per square meter of material will be 5.41 kg. With the same thickness, a square meter of aluminum weighs less - on average 1.35 kg, and copper - more (4.45 kg).
  • the thickness of the zinc layer used as a protective coating. The zinc layer can weigh from 220 g to 275 g per square meter. m. The thicker it is, the heavier the sheet and the more durable;
  • protective polymer layer. Various materials can be used to create it: plastisol, pural, polyester, PVDF. They have different application thicknesses. It is least of all in polyester, most of all in plastisol: polyester - 0.025 mm, pural - 0.050 mm, plastisol - 0.2 mm. The increase in the thickness of the protective layer increases the weight of the sheet of metal. So, a square meter of metal tiles with a polyester coating (with other identical characteristics) will weigh 3.6 kg, when using PVDF - 4.5 kg, pural - 5.0 kg, and plastisol is already 5.5 kg.
  • relief depth. The higher it is, the heavier the leaf.

Calculation of the weight of a square meter of galvanized sheet according to the formula

The main part of the weight of the metal tile is the weight of the galvanized sheet with a polymer coating. Therefore, to calculate the total mass, we calculate separately the weight of a square meter of metal, galvanized and polymer coatings.

Values required for calculation:

  • steel density - 7.85 t / m3;
  • zinc density - 7.12 t / m3;
  • polymer density - 1.5 t / m3;
  • polymer coating thickness - 0.025 mm (polyester).

Table: thickness of zinc coating of metal sheet depending on class

Zinc coating class Zinc thickness, mm
one 0.0381
2 0.0216
Z 100 0.0208
Z 140 0.0212
Z 180 0.0260
Z 200 0.0297
Z 275 0.0405

The calculation is made according to the formula: M = t * l * h * p, where: t - material thickness, l - length, h - width, p - density.

  • the weight of a square meter of metal without a galvanized coating with a thickness of 0.46 mm is: 0.46x1x1x7.85 = 3.61 kg;
  • the weight of a galvanized coating of class 1 is: 0.0381x1x1x7.13 = 0.27 kg;
  • the weight of the polyester polymer coating is: 0.025x1x1x1.5 = 0.04 kg.

Add up all the results. It turns out 3.92 kg.

In general, the weight of a square meter of metal tile is within 3.6 kg. - 6.0 kg. It is often indicated by the manufacturer for each specific brand. Then there is no special need to calculate it yourself.

Table: comparison of the weight of metal tiles with other materials

Material

Weight 1 m2

(kg)

Metal tile 3-6
Slate 10-15
Ondulin 3-4
Bituminous shingles 8-12
Ceramic tiles 30-40
Cement tiles 40

As you can see, metal tiles are one of the lightest materials for roofing. Only ondulin is lighter, but the metal tile is stronger.

Now let's move on to calculating the weight of the entire roofing pie.

Roofing cake weight with metal roofing

Let's take the approximate weight of 1 sq. m of roofing pie components: metal tiles - 5 kg; hydro and vapor barrier made of a polymer membrane - 1.5 kg; mineral wool insulation - 10 kg; sheathing of boards 2.5 cm - 15 kg. If we add up all the data obtained, we get 31.5 kg. We use a correction factor of 1.1. Multiply 31.5 kg by 1.1. We get 34.7 kg. This is the weight per square meter of roofing cake. The standard thickness of the load-bearing walls and truss system is designed for loads up to 250 kg / sq. m. There is still a fairly large supply.

The method for calculating the number of sheets of metal tile considered in the article will allow you to economically use the material and reduce the cost of arranging your roof. In addition, the given characteristics of various brands of metal tiles will allow you to choose exactly what is needed for your roof. Calculation of its weight will make your roof reliable and safe for many years.
