Technical characteristics of metal tiles "Monterrey"

It was with this brand that at the end of the 80s of the last century the triumphal procession of metal tiles began around the world. Today different types of "Monterrey" due to its popularity are necessarily present in the collections of metal tile manufacturers.

"Monterrey" - profiled corrugated steel sheets, similar in appearance to traditional roof tiles. These are multi-level products made using modern technologies, thanks to which this roofing material is distinguished by:

  • low weight, which does not require the creation of a reinforced frame and does not make the roof heavier;
  • strength due to its structure and durability - service life is more than 50 years;
  • ease of installation - even a person who does not have professional skills can do the installation;
  • environmental friendliness, fire resistance and versatility - suitable for installation on roofs of any shape, regardless of the type of construction.

"Monterrey" consists of four layers, each of which performs its own functions.

  1. The first layer (galvanized) and the second - anti-corrosion coating - protect the sheets from corrosion and rust. These are very important functions for the durability of the covering decking, therefore these two layers are protected from abrasion by the following layers.
  2. Primer - is responsible for the high-quality adhesion of the polymer layer to the metal and the timely removal of static electricity.
  3. Colored polymer layering, with the help of which the surface relief is created, resistance to ultraviolet light and mechanical stress appears, and the thermal conductivity coefficient decreases.

    Top-class metal tile "Monterrey" consists of four layers - galvanized and anti-corrosion protective layer, primer and colored polymer coating

Thanks to this structure, all the advantages of the Monterrey metal tile are achieved. Here you can add one more plus, very significant for developers - efficiency, that is, acceptable cost and rational consumption of material.

Kinds

Metal tiles "Monterrey" are very diverse. There are many types of it, which differ in step depth, color standard - RAL or RR, step and waveform, type of coating, sheet thickness. But the geometric proportions remain accurate and constant, which allows you to quickly carry out roofing work and get a high-quality result.

The main quality criterion is the thickness of the parent metal - from 0.35 mm to 0.5 mm. Leading manufacturers consider the thickness of 0.5 mm to be the standard and any deviation (even in 1 micrometer - 0.01 mm) is perceived negatively.

Video: why steel thickness is so important for metal tiles

As for the shape of the profile (picture), a special combination of wave parameters makes any type of Monterrey metal tile similar to natural, which makes it look harmonious and impressive everywhere.

The most popular types:

  1. The Lider Ceramic tile is an amazing combination of the beauty of ancient Roman clay tiles and the advantages of modern metal roofing. To achieve this effect, the paint is carefully applied to the steel in 2 steps. This type of metal tile is used to cover the roof in antique-style houses.

    The metal tile "Monterrey Crystal" is a steel sheet galvanized on both sides with a protective polyester layer, which guarantees high corrosion resistance (RC3) and immunity to UV rays (RUV4)

  3. Metal tile "Monterrey" with a polymer coating GrandeMat without the use of chrome and heavy metals. This is a new generation of metal tiles. It is more expensive than other types due to its exceptional advantages - maximum strength, resistance to ultraviolet radiation and temperature fluctuations. And also longevity - the guarantee for color preservation and absence of corrosion is 30 years, and the service life is about 60 years.

    The structure of the GrandeMat coating has the luster of natural crystals, randomly reflected, which gives the roof a picturesque and mysterious look

  4. The Monterrey 3D uniform is an everlasting classic. Metal tiles with a step height of 16 mm and a pitch of 350 mm (350x16 mm) are distinguished by the presence of two drain grooves, which provides double protection against leaks in the overlap areas. Thanks to this geometry of the module, invisibility of the joints and complete sealing are achieved.

Criterias of choice

The list can be continued indefinitely. But when choosing it is worth remembering that the quality of the Monterrey metal tile directly depends on its coverage:

  1. Standard polyester (PE) - economical option - thin spraying, the most inexpensive, but also less resistant to fading and mechanical stress. But rich in color shades. Well suited for roofing in temperate climates where there are no severe frosts and abnormal heat.
  2. Matte Polyester (MPE) - Much stronger than standard polymer braiding, but limited in color. In quality it resembles ceramic tiles, only more democratic in price.
  3. Polydifluorite (PVDF) is the highest quality and most expensive polymer coating that ensures color retention for many years. Therefore, metal tiles with such a layer can be used in any region.
  4. Pural is a nine-layer decorative protection with the addition of polyamide. Thinner than PVDF, nevertheless it well protects metal tiles from mechanical damage, corrosion and direct sunlight, ensuring the durability of the coating.

If the house is located away from dusty roads and industrial plants in a mild climatic zone, then you can choose a coating based on plain, textured or smooth polyester with polyurethane and plastisol. For buildings near highways and industrial facilities, stronger protection is needed - metal tiles with a matte polyester coating. Well, for regions where the chemical and processing industries are concentrated, you will need Monterrey with pural spraying or PVDF.

The variety of Monterrey metal tiles allows each consumer to choose a suitable option for himself in terms of price, quality, size and manufacturer's reliability, so that the roof looks fashionable, solid, beautiful and lasts a long time.

Dimensions of metal tiles "Monterrey"

Choosing a metal tile "Monterrey" as a covering material for the roof, first of all, you need to pay attention to the length and width of the sheets, which are subdivided into full size and useful:

  • overall length (width) is the distance from edge to edge. Length varies from 0.4 m to 8 m, width - from 1.16 m to 1.19 m;
  • the total length (width) minus the size of the overlaps will be the effective sheet length and width. The amount of overlap depends on the manufacturer. Typical dimensions are 6–8 cm in width and 10–15 cm in length.

Knowing these values, it is easy to determine the area of 1 sheet by multiplying its length by width. Dividing the roof area by the area of 1 sheet, you can find out how much metal you need to buy.

Full and useful width of a metal tile
Full and useful width of a metal tile

The useful width of a sheet of metal tile is less than its full width by the amount of overlaps on both sides

For example: roof area 50 m², total sheet length 4.5 m, width 1.16 m. Longitudinal overlaps 10 cm, transverse 6 cm.

  1. The useful area of 1 sheet is calculated - (4.5 - 0.1) x (1.16 - 0.06) = 4.84 m2.
  2. Determine the number of sheets - 50: 4.84 = 10.33 pieces + 10% stock (at least) = 11.36 ≈ 12 sheets.

In addition to length and width, the thickness of the sheets must be taken into account. Thickness of 0.45–0.5 mm is considered more in demand. Naturally, the thicker the sheets, the more protected the roof will be. However, one must not forget about the maximum possible load on the load-bearing walls and foundation, since a thicker cover requires a more powerful foundation. In addition, thin sheets are more difficult to transport, they can withstand less loads and are capricious in installation.

Measuring the thickness of a sheet of metal
Measuring the thickness of a sheet of metal

Before buying a metal tile, it is recommended to measure its thickness using a special micrometer device

By measuring, it is advisable to make sure that the step declared by the manufacturer is correct (the optimal value is 35–40 cm), as well as the height of the profile (1.8–2.5 cm). The larger the step, the less frequent the lathing, which means that there will be less pressure on the supporting structures of the house. But this does not mean that the step can be increased independently, regardless of the wavelength. In this case, there is a great risk of not fixing the metal tile at all, or fixing it weakly. As a result, the coating can simply be torn off the roof in strong winds.

Any metal tile - and "Monterrey" is no exception - is excellent for gable and hipped roofs due to the fact that the consumption on such roofs is the most economical, and installation is done quickly and easily. But the more complex the shape of the roof or the profile of the metal tile, the more material will go to waste. This is not due to the difficulty of installation, but to the adjustment of the sheets to the drawing. When buying metal tiles, this factor cannot be ignored, since it significantly overestimates the cost of work.

Metal tile colors

Color palette "Monterrey" is very extensive - more than 50 different colors and shades. The most demanded of them are:

  • chocolate brown and beige colors;

    The skillfully chosen design of the house in combination with the muted red-burgundy metal tile dramatically attracts attention and gives the home a domineering and bold image

  • gray, gray-blue and tobacco-green colors. Such a calm range of colors, smooth or textured, matte rather than glossy, will perfectly fit into any facade cladding and will give the house quality and grandeur;

    Green-gray tiles have the color of fog in a summer forest, which gives a sense of calm and harmony to the roof not only with the house, but also with the entire surrounding space

  • the black color fashionable today, as well as bright blue colors will be appropriate when the design of the house is designed in high-tech or minimalist style;

    Metal tile "Monterrey" in black

    Black metal tiles on the roof of the house can be described as "austere grace"

  • colorful yellow, glossy red, picturesque green and other bright colors look, of course, catchy, but are used less often. Since they oblige the facade of the house to correspond to them, otherwise they will simply suppress it.

    Metal tile "Monterrey" yellow
    Metal tile "Monterrey" yellow

    The yellow roof made of Monterrey metal tiles looks bright and cheerful, being the color embodiment of energy, movement and positiveness, but it places high demands on the design of the entire structure

In general, the choice of color is only personal preferences and fantasies of the homeowners. The main thing is to purchase the main covering material and additional elements from one manufacturer in order to avoid the slightest color mismatch. For metal tiles, this is important - if ceramics and "Shinglas", for example, can be mixed and get an interesting result, then this is impossible with metal tile sheets. We'll have to buy a new batch or paint the entire roof.

RAL and RR color standards

The Monterrey color range is classified according to the RAL (Germany) and RR (Finland) catalogs. And in one and in the other catalog, all colors come under codes indicating color, brightness and saturation.

  1. The RAL catalog includes 5 types of palette - Classic, Digital, Effect, Design, Color Feeling. The colors are encoded with four-digit numbers (XXXX), on which the first number indicates the color - 1XXX (yellow tones), 2XXX (orange), etc. There are 9 groups in total, including mother of pearl and metallic. In total, the RAL system has 2328 different colors and shades. Please note that in RAL lines the colors may be similar, but have different shades. Therefore, it is not easy to choose according to the RAL catalog, and specifically - RAL CLASSIC or RAL DESIGN, for example.

    The German RAL catalog is by far the most popular color system

  2. The RR (RaColor) catalog was developed by the Finnish company Ruukki, which denotes the colors RR XX - in particular, RR 32 corresponds to dark brown. There are few colors in this catalog, which is why it is easier to choose a shade for it. The RR color scheme is distinguished by consistency and calmness. Just what the admirers of color classics and presentability need.

Self-tapping screws for metal tiles "Monterrey"

Fasten the Monterrey metal tile on special roofing screws. Their use serves as a guarantee of simplicity, convenience and speed of installation. High-quality self-tapping screws are made from stainless steel, brass or carbon steel. A colored polymer layer is applied to the head of the self-tapping screws, which helps to select the fasteners to match the color of the coating.

Builders have long appreciated the advantages of self-tapping screws, but developers, alas, sometimes dismiss the quality of fasteners. The desire to save money affects. This is understandable, since branded screws are expensive. But such savings can be a failure. At best, the residents of the house will wake up from the roar of rain. And at worst, the wind will tear or deform the roofing. This means that you will have to make repairs, moreover, unplanned, requiring considerable expenses. So good self-tapping screws are a guarantee of the durability of the roof and your own peace of mind.

Self-tapping screws for fastening "Monterrey"

For fastening the metal tile "Monterrey" it is necessary to use only high-quality self-tapping screws, otherwise the manufacturer will refuse the warranty if the coating is damaged

When buying, you need to pay attention to the following details:

  1. The sealing washer must be made from premium rubber that can withstand extreme temperature fluctuations, extreme frosts and sultry sunlight for many years. Otherwise, a rubber gasket that has lost its properties will cause roof leaks. In addition, it should fit snugly against the screw head.
  2. The color coating of the washer must be free from defects. Even minor scratches indicate a poor-quality product.
  3. The metal of the self-tapping screws must be strong. Masters advise strongly to squeeze the self-tapping head with pliers. If it wrinkles, or paint peels off, then it is better not to use such fasteners.
  4. It is desirable that the fasteners and metal tiles are from the same manufacturer.

Installation of battens

Before laying metal tiles, preparatory work is carried out:

  1. Install gutter holders around the perimeter.

    Installing gutter brackets
    Installing gutter brackets

    Gutter brackets are installed prior to roofing

  2. Lay a waterproofing film or membrane (with a slight slack for better ventilation of the under-roof space) and fix it with counter battens.

    Laying waterproofing
    Laying waterproofing

    The waterproofing material is laid on the rafter legs or on the mounted base and secured with counter racks

  3. On top of the counter rails, a crate is stuffed parallel to the ridge ridge.

    Lathing for metal tiles "Monterrey"

    Sheathing for metal tiles "Monterrey" is stuffed strictly according to the scheme, maintaining an interval between rows equal to the step (shear wavelength) of a particular type of roofing material

  4. Two additional slats are mounted on both sides of the ridge with a distance of 5 cm between them - they will be a support for the ridge and ridge elements.

    Arrangement of the ridge knot
    Arrangement of the ridge knot

    Having reached the ridge ridge, two additional boards are laid on each side for arranging the base for the ridge and additional elements

The remaining rows of the crate are laid with an interval equal to the step of the transverse wave of the selected model of metal tile. Usually it is indicated by the manufacturer, but it will be useful to confirm this value with measurements. The only exceptions are the first two rows - the distance between them is less than a step of 50–70 mm and the last row in front of the ridge - it is stuffed in such a way that the cut sheet of metal tile does not bend. In addition, the first row is made higher than the rest of the tiers by the height of the transverse wave (boards or a bar of a larger section are used), since the lower rail is placed under the step of the sheet of metal tile. Usually the level difference is 10-15 mm.

The role of the crate is to hold the metal tile fixed to it. But it must not only hold the covering flooring, but also withstand it. And in addition - and snow load. Therefore, the bearing capacity of the battens is very important.

For lathing, use only high-quality materials - edged or grooved boards with a thickness of at least 25 mm, a bar 50 mm thick or a metal profile. No plywood or particle board. A suitable section of sawn timber is determined by the formulas indicated in the calculations of wooden structures. However, this method is more suitable for professionals. And in reality they act much easier - they nail a board of a certain section between the rafters and stand on it with all their weight. If you get a deflection, take a board with a larger section. When there is no significant deflection, then the board is suitable for lathing. For the sample, a person of average build is chosen who does not have obvious problems with being overweight and is not afraid of open space and height.

How to make a roof with your own hands

To reduce the cost of construction, many resort to laying metal tiles on their own. There is nothing complicated in such works, but first you need to familiarize yourself with all the nuances of installation.

First, they make calculations for the purchase of roofing material. We have already described how to calculate the number of required sheets. After purchasing the covering material, additional and fastening elements, the necessary tools are prepared:

  • marker for marking and tape measure;
  • straight long rail or rule;
  • a screwdriver and a tool for cutting sheets - jigsaw, circular saw or metal shears;
  • gun for applying sealant.

    Tools for the installation of metal tiles
    Tools for the installation of metal tiles

    It is strictly forbidden to use an angle grinder (grinder) for cutting metal sheets

They start with the arrangement of the roofing pie, which includes:

  • rafter system;
  • vapor barrier and insulation;
  • waterproofing;
  • counter and lathing;
  • metal tile.

    A standard roofing cake of hydro, steam and heat insulation layers with appropriate ventilation gaps must be laid under the Monterrey metal tile

Key points to follow when arranging a roof with metal roofing:

  1. Rafters for a metal roof are made of 50x150 mm timber with a pitch of 550–900 mm. Insulation is selected for the step of the rafters. After installing and fastening the rafters, a control measurement of the slopes is made, checking the rectangularity and plane of the structure. The slopes are measured diagonally - deviations up to 10 mm are permissible. Subsequently, such deviations can be easily corrected by extras.

    Rafter system for metal tiles
    Rafter system for metal tiles

    Roof trusses are assembled from a board of 50x150 mm and installed with a step of 55-90 cm

  2. The required length of the sheets is determined by the length of the slopes - the distance from the ridge ridge to the cornice strip plus 40 mm to the cornice overhang. When the length of the slopes is more than 6 m, the metal-tile sheets are divided into 2 or more fragments, which are laid with overlaps of 15 cm. Naturally, when laying long whole sheets of joints, fewer joints are obtained, nevertheless, it is much more difficult to work with them than with short ones.
  3. To avoid freezing of the roof, and then the whole house, it is necessary to use an insulation material of appropriate thickness. You cannot save on thermal insulation. This is fraught with the formation of ice on the metal tile and its damage, rotting of the crate and rafters, the appearance of mold and the destruction of the decoration of the premises. To protect the insulation from the inside, a vapor barrier is laid, and from the outside, waterproofing materials.

    Laying a vapor barrier coating
    Laying a vapor barrier coating

    From the side of the room, the insulation is protected by a vapor barrier membrane, which prevents the penetration of warm humid air into the insulation layer, followed by condensation

  4. The metal tiles are laid one by one, starting from one of the lower corners. You cannot walk on already mounted sheets; you should only move along the crate. All work must be done with gloves, soft shoes and clothing so as not to damage the metal roofing.

  5. Sheets of metal tiles are attached to each row of the crate through a wave.

Installation features

The installation of metal tiles is started after filling the crate.

  1. The first sheet is laid with a protrusion from the eaves of 40-50 mm. This ledge will form the eaves. Its task is to prevent moisture from entering and to ensure ventilation of the roof space.
  2. Align the sheet and fix it in the upper part with one self-tapping screw. The sheet should move freely.
  3. With an overlap of 15 cm, lay the second sheet and also make a fit. Then they attach it to the first sheet, but not to the crate.
  4. A couple more sheets are laid in the same way, fastening them together and leveling them.

    Installation of sheets of metal in one row

    At the first stage, metal-tile sheets are stacked in one row and attached to each other

  5. The finished block of 2-4 sheets bonded together is finally assembled relative to the cornice and end strip - the angle of the sheets between the strips should be 90 °.
  6. The metal tile "Monterrey" is fixed to the crate using self-tapping screws 4.8x38 mm, screwing them under the wave and through the wave. Approximately 8 self-tapping screws are required to secure 1 m² of covering material.

    When screwing in self-tapping screws, you must try to prevent jamming of the sealing washer, which can arise with too much tightening force

  7. When laying Monterrey metal tiles, an internal and external apron is installed near the pipes leading to the roof, with the obligatory sealing of the connection sections. The same is done in the areas of abutment of the roof to the outer walls, using abutment strips and connecting them together with an overlap of 10 cm.
