House with roofing ondulin. Such a roof is perfect for both a small private house and a presentable country cottage

Roof construction is an important construction phase. Its purpose is to protect the house from atmospheric phenomena and to decorate it. Therefore, it is worth approaching the arrangement of the roof seriously, so as not to repair or rebuild it from year to year. Consider the installation of an ondulin roof - one of the demanded roofing decks today, which, along with a low cost, has excellent performance characteristics.

Despite the fact that the onduline coating is considered a budget option, it has excellent qualities that sometimes more expensive roofing materials do not have:

  • onduline sheets do not deform or crack during delivery and installation;
  • do not form condensation during sudden temperature changes, which means that it is possible to save on insulating films;
  • have a low weight, so you can profit on the rafter system and the installation of a solid sheathing made of plywood and OSB-3 instead of wood;
  • can withstand heavy loads - in particular, squall winds up to 200 km / h;
  • not afraid of acids, oils and alkaline environment;
  • are distinguished by excellent sound insulation;
  • well resist mold and mildew;
  • do not require painting at the cut points and do not contain asbestos, which guarantees environmental safety.

Video: why ondulin

The service life of the ondulin coating is 15 years. With proper installation, an ondulin roof can last up to 35 years or more. Few roofing materials in this price range can boast such longevity. The standard warranty for thin sheet materials in the budget segment is 5-10 years.

Calculation of materials for roofing from ondulin

Calculation of roofing materials is one of the most difficult tasks for developers. On the one hand, I want to save money, and on the other, I want to build reliable, high-quality housing so that it will faithfully serve not only children, but also grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren.

Influence of ondulin on the rafter system

The basis of the supporting system of the pitched roof is the Mauerlat - a wooden beam laid on the upper edges of the walls. It connects the roof of the house with the building itself, takes on the load of the load-bearing and enclosing elements of the roof and distributes it evenly along the perimeter of the walls. Therefore, it is very important to correctly calculate the Mauerlat so that its parameters correspond to the maximum bearing capacity of the walls and foundation.

The following factors influence the size of the Mauerlat bar:

  • roof structure and type of rafter system;
  • climatic loads in a specific area;
  • roof weight - the total weight of the rafter system, roofing cake, sheathing and covering material.

We will not talk about the features of the roof structure in this article. This is a separate topic. Let's just say that the more intricate the shape of the roof, the more complex the rafter system and the more various elements and fasteners it contains. This design is usually quite heavy. Accordingly, for the Mauerlat, lumber of a larger section will be required, which means that construction will be more expensive. And the type of rafter system plays an important role. A block from layered rafters is easier to manufacture than from hanging elements. It puts less stress on the Mauerlat and reduces roof erection costs.

But we will consider the influence of climatic factors and the weight of the roof in more detail.

Table: Comparison of roof loads from ondulin roofing and sand-cement tiles

Load Cement-sand tile Ondulin
Weight of roofing materials, kg / m2 50 3
Lathing weight, kg / m² 20 3
Rafter system weight, kg / m² 20 20
Total, kg / m2 90 26

Let's say the roof area is 150 m². Then the load on the base can be calculated as follows:

  • for roofs made of ondulin sheets - 26 kg / m² x 150 m² = 3,900 kg;
  • for a roof made of sand-cement tiles - 90 kg / m² x 150 m² = 14,500 kg.

Climatic loads are determined in accordance with building codes 2.01.07–85, which include:

  • snow loads by region;

    Snow load map
    Snow load map

    The entire territory of Russia is divided into 8 regions, in each of which the snow load is within the specified limits

  • wind loads.

    Wind load map
    Wind load map

    In addition to the effect of snow cover during the construction of the roof, it is necessary to take into account the wind load in the construction region

As an example, let us choose a region in the middle lane, where the snow load is 180 kg / m², and the wind load is 32 kg / m².

Then the total load on the Mauerlat roof with an area of 150 m² is:

  • for a roof made of ondulin sheets - 3,900 kg + (180 kg / m² x 150 m² + 32 kg / m² x 150 m²) = 35,700 kg;
  • for a roof made of sand-cement tiles - 14,500 + (180 kg / m² x 150 m² + 32 kg / m² x 150 m²) = 46,300 kg.

That is, the use of ondulin as a covering material reduces the load by almost 23%. This means that the cross-section of lumber is reduced and, accordingly, the cost of building a roof. If we add here the low price of ondulin itself, then the conclusion is obvious: a roof with an ondulin coating is a profitable solution with a small construction budget.

In addition, ondulin is a very effective and plastic material, so it can cover the most fantastic roof configurations. No wonder the Chinese restorers used ondulin during the reconstruction of the imperial residence. And they already know a lot.

During the restoration of the imperial palace, Chinese craftsmen used ondulin to cover roofs of unusual shape.

Calculation of roofing material

Before calculating the amount of ondulin, you need to take accurate measurements of the roof. They are performed after installing the rafter system - the skeleton of the roof. At the same time, the geometry of the future roof is also checked by measuring the slopes from corner to corner along the diagonal. In the case of slight distortions, flaws are corrected with crate or additional details.

Let's look at an example of how to calculate ondulin for a roof. Let us assume the following initial data: the roof area is 150 m², the length of the ridge bar is 15 m, the valley is 8 m and the pediment is 5 m. The roof has a ventilation pipe with a perimeter of 1.5 m and an angle of inclination of 30 °.

Typical dimensions of a 10-wave sheet ondulin:

  • width 950 mm;
  • length 2,000 mm;
  • thickness 3 mm;
  • wave height 36 mm;
  • weight 6 kg.

With these values, the area of one sheet is equal to (0.95 mx 2.00 m) = 1.9 m².

Ondulin sheets 10 waves long
Ondulin sheets 10 waves long

Standard ondulin sheets are 10 waves long

However, ondulin sheets are mounted with overlaps, the dimensions of which depend on the slope of the slopes:

  1. If the angle of inclination of the roof is up to 10 °, then 2 waves go to the side overlaps, and 30 cm to the vertical ones. In this case, the useful area of the sheet will be approximately 1.3 m2: (0.95 - (2 x 0.095)) x (2 - 0.3) ≈ 1.3.
  2. When arranging a roof with a slope of 10-15 °, the useful area of one sheet will be approximately 1.5 m2, since one wave will go to the side overlap, and the vertical one will be 20 cm: (0.95 - 0.095) x (2 - 0.2) ≈ 1.5.
  3. When the angle of inclination is more than 15 °, the useful area of the sheet can be rounded up to 1.6 m², taking into account that the lateral overlap consists of one wave, and the vertical one is 17 cm: (0.95 - 0.095) x (2 - 0.17) ≈ 1.6.

Now let's calculate the number of sheets to cover the slopes. According to our initial data - 150 m²: 1.6 m² = 93.75 sheets. Usually, a margin of 5% is added to the final result in order to take into account possible losses for cutting sheets and random errors. Thus, we need 93.75 x 1.05 = 98.4 ≈ 99 sheets.

If the roof has a complex shape, then:

  • it is divided into geometric shapes, the area of each is counted and summed up;
  • add at least 10-15% to the stock.

In addition, it is advisable to cover complex roofs with ondulin tiles. It has 7 waves instead of 10 and is easier to style.

Sheets of ondulin tiles have fewer waves and are easier to fit, therefore they are recommended for use on complex roofs

Calculation of components

We calculate the number of accompanying components based on the following values:

  1. Ridge elements. The standard length is 2 m, of which 0.15 m goes for the overlap, so 1.85 m remains. The length of our ridge is 15 m, which means that 15 will be required: 1.85 = 8.1 ≈ 9 pieces.

    Ridge element
    Ridge element

    The ridge element for ondulin roofing is sold in 2 m lengths

  2. Endova. The normal length of the part is 1.1 m, minus the overlaps of 0.15 m, 8 are needed: (1–0.15) = 8.4 ≈ 9 pieces.

    Endova
    Endova

    Decorative and protective strips installed at the junction of two slopes - valleys - are produced in the color of the main coating and have a length of 1.1 m

  3. The gable elements for finishing the roof gables are calculated similarly. Their standard length is 0.9 m, and their working length is 0.75 m (0.15 m goes for the overlap). Based on this, we will have to buy 5 m: (0.9 - 0.15 m) = 6.7 ≈ 7 pieces.

    Gable element
    Gable element

    Gabled elements protect the sheets of ondulin at the edge of the pediment and are 0.9 m long

  4. Covering apron and sealing tape. The apron has a total length of 94 cm, minus the overlaps, it turns out 84.5 cm. That is, for a ventilation pipe with a perimeter of 1.5 m, as in our example, it is enough to purchase 2 aprons (1.5: 0.845) and one tape 2, 5 m (average length).

    Covering apron
    Covering apron

    The covering apron is installed at the junction of the roof with the chimney and closed from above with a sealing tape

  5. Roofing nails are consumed 20 pieces per sheet. Ondulin manufacturers advise to count nails according to the formula: D = N x 20 + L k x 20 + L f x 4 + L p x 10, where D is the number of nails, N is the number of sheets, L k, L f, L p are the length ridge, pediment and abutments to the wall, respectively. Applying this formula to our original data, we get (99 x 20) + (9 x 2 x 20) + (7 x 0.9 x 4) + (2 x 0.94 x 10) = 2,384 pieces. We add a stock of 5%, we get 2,500 pieces.

    Ondulin sheets are attached to the lathing using special roofing nails

Let's summarize. To cover a 150 m² roof with ondulin you will need:

  • 99 sheets of covering material;
  • 2,500 nails;
  • 9 ridge elements;
  • 9 valley slats;
  • 7 gable elements;
  • 2 aprons;
  • 1 sealing tape.

Laying ondulin on the roof with your own hands

Consider the installation of ondulin using the example of the reconstruction of a slate roof, which has served for 25 years. The previous coating will not be dismantled.

  1. The old roofing sheet is cleaned from dirt in any convenient way.

    Cleaning the old coating
    Cleaning the old coating

    Before laying ondulin on the old roof, the previous coating is thoroughly cleaned of debris by any available method, for example, by washing under pressure

  2. Check the geometry of the ramps.

    Roof measurements
    Roof measurements

    Before laying a new coating, it is imperative to measure the roof and check its geometry in order to correct discrepancies in time

  3. At the end of the lathing beams, cuts are made along the profile of the ridge ridge.
  4. The longitudinal lines of the crate are laid - after 4 waves of old slate and fixed in every fifth wave with self-tapping screws 80 mm long. The extreme beams are mounted first.

    Longitudinal beams of the lathing
    Longitudinal beams of the lathing

    Longitudinal bars are fastened between the waves of the old slate, taking into account their height

  5. Transverse beams are laid with a certain step indicated in the instructions for the purchased material. When laying on an old coating, a small recess is cut out in the transverse beams passing in the places where the slate sheets overlap. This is done so that all the crate links are in the same plane.
  6. Pull the string along the eaves edge at a distance of 70 mm from the walls to level the lower tier of the sheets and begin the installation of ondulin from the side opposite to the wind direction.

    Finished crate

    Ondulin is mounted on the finished crate, starting the laying of sheets from the leeward side

  7. It is very important to correctly lay the first sheet along the signal string - the lower end of the sheet should contact the stretched tape and protrude 1 wave from the side of the roof. They are guided by the first sheet with the laying of the rest.

    Laying ondulin

    Before laying, a twine is pulled along the lower edge of the roof, along which the first row of ondulin sheets will be aligned

  8. Drive the first 4 nails in the corners. Nails are used special, designed specifically for ondulin. They are equipped with rubber washers for maximum tightness.

    Fastening sheets
    Fastening sheets

    First, the ondulin sheet is fixed with four nails along the crests of the extreme waves, leaving one wave to overlap

  9. The rest of the nails are hammered over the wave according to the scheme according to the attached instructions - along the lower edge of the sheet in each wave, and in the middle and at the top - according to the slope angle.

    Final fixation of ondulin sheets
    Final fixation of ondulin sheets

    Each sheet of ondulin is fixed to the crate according to the scheme, using strictly 20 special nails with a rubber gasket under the cap

  10. The remaining sheets are laid with longitudinal and transverse overlaps in accordance with the slope of the roof.
  11. In the places of passage of pipes, skylights and other abutments, holes are cut along the contour of the passage element and the sheets of ondulin are laid as tightly as possible to its edges, leaving a gap between pipes and sheets of 0.5 cm. An apron is attached and sealed with a special tape to protect against penetration moisture.

    Laying ondulin near the chimney

    Near chimneys, windows and ventilation outlets, sheets of ondulin are laid as tightly as possible to the junction

  12. After complete laying of the ondulin, they begin to install the ridge, starting from the side opposite to the direction of the wind, as in the case of the main laying of sheets. The standard overlap of the ridge elements is 0.15 m. They are fixed with nails, hammering into each wave of the sheet and stepping back 5 cm from the edge.

    Ridge installation

    Ridge elements on the roof made of ondulin are mounted with an overlap and fixed with nails along the crest of each wave of the main covering material

  13. Wind boards are mounted to the ends of the transverse lathing, cutting them off in the area of the ridge at an angle of inclination of the roof.
  14. Attach the wind cornice strips to the lower horizontal bar of the sheathing.

The installation of the roof is complete. The roof of the house has received a new life. Moreover, the area of the new roof should be larger than the previous one and completely hide it.

Installation of a new roof

Installation of a new roof is carried out in a similar way. But if, when laying the ondulin on the old roofing from the roofing pie, there was only a sparse lathing stuffed over the old coating, then when installing the roof from scratch, all the necessary layers must be laid:

  • ceiling filing;
  • vapor barrier;
  • insulation padded between the rafter legs;
  • waterproofing;
  • counter-lathing and step-by-step lathing or solid lathing with a low slope of the roof;
  • roofing material.

    When laying ondulin on a new roof, you need to install a standard roofing cake with all the necessary ventilation gaps

In order for the ondulin roof to serve for a long time, does not require repair and replacement of individual sections, you should:

  • strictly follow the installation instructions;

    Stages of ondulin installation
    Stages of ondulin installation

    Installation instructions for ondulin sheets contain a detailed description of all necessary operations with layouts of materials and locations of fasteners

  • use 20 specially designed nails to fasten one sheet;
  • do not stretch the corrugated sheets of ondulin along the crate - the sheets should lay down easily and freely, as stipulated by their dimensions.

Video: errors when installing ondulin

Mount ondulin on the roof

To fasten ondulin, special nails are used - strictly 20 pieces per sheet. First, make a rough fixation of the sheet with four nails, driving them along the edges from above and below. Finally, the sheets are fixed according to the angle of inclination of the roof:

  1. At low slope in the bottom row, nails are driven into the crest of each wave, in the second and third rows through the wave.
  2. With a slope of 10-15 °, the lower row is attached in the same way - to the crest of each wave, the second row - after two waves, the third row - after one, the fourth - again after two waves.
  3. At an angle of inclination of more than 15 ° in the bottom row, nails are again driven into each wave, in the middle row - in three waves in a row, and in the next two - through a wave.
Ondulin fastening scheme

The location of fasteners for fixing ondulin sheets depends on the angle of inclination of the roof

Some technological standards for fixing ondulin on the roof, which must be adhered to

  1. Layouts for cutting sheets are applied with crayons or pencils.
  2. Ondulin sheets are cut with an ordinary hacksaw, periodically wetting it in plain water to clean the teeth. You can apply a thin layer of silicone grease to both sides of the hacksaw blade before starting work. A jigsaw will help speed up the cutting of sheets.

    Cutting ondulin
    Cutting ondulin

    When cutting sheets, use a hacksaw or jigsaw, which is easier and faster to work with.

  3. Before cutting, it is worth holding a sharp knife several times along the line of the planned cut.
  4. Coating sheets marked "Ondulin Smart" and "Ondulin DIY" have ready-made markings for driving nails. However, it is designed for roofs with a slope of 15 °. In other cases, you need to follow the scheme described above.
  5. Nails are driven strictly on the crest of the wave perpendicular to the plane of the roof. Any deviations are unacceptable, since this is fraught with possible leaks at the attachment points and damage to the entire roof or part of it over time.
  6. The force of the blow should be measured - the head of the nail should press firmly against the surface of the sheet, but not press into it. Any attempt to remove a deformed nail will result in deformation of the sheet, which will have to be replaced.

    Spoiled Ondulin Leaf
    Spoiled Ondulin Leaf

    An improperly driven nail will ruin the canvas at the attachment point - as a result, you will have to change the entire sheet

  7. If a whole sheet is laid at the beginning of each row, nodes of intersection of the four corners will appear, which in general does not look very attractive. Therefore, roofers recommend laying ondulin with an offset of ½ the width of the sheet. The result is neat, beautiful seams, much more reliable in terms of tightness.

    Laying ondulin with bandaging sheets
    Laying ondulin with bandaging sheets

    In order to avoid the formation of intersection points of four sheets, it is better to start every second row with half a sheet.

  8. In no case should the sheets be stretched in order to save money. Since the stretched sheets will go in waves during temperature changes, and the nail head forms a hole at the attachment point, such a coating will need to be changed very soon.
  9. It is possible to move on the ondulin flooring only in soft shoes, stepping across the sheet on the crests of the waves.
  10. Fastening the sheets to the metal crate is done using self-tapping screws and a drill. In this case, it is necessary to accurately calculate the tightening force - the head of the screws should fit snugly to the sheet, as when fastening to the crate made of wood.
  11. For sealing it is better to use Onduflesh self-adhesive tape, which is specially designed for this purpose.

Features of installation of roof elements ondulin

When arranging any roof, it is important to prevent leaks at the junctions to vertical structures - all kinds of sheds, roofs of attached terraces, verandas, etc. This is where hard-to-reach and most vulnerable places are formed. There are two types of joining the roof to vertical structures - angular and lateral.

Laying ondulin with a corner abutment

  1. The crate is mounted with a certain step. At the junctions, a continuous crate with a width of 250-300 mm is stuffed.
  2. Onduline sheets are laid and fixed according to the instructions.
  3. The valley is laid along the wavelength of the ondulin, starting from the corner of the wall (the edge of the cornice) from bottom to top with an overlap of 150 mm. Fastened with nails to the lathing every 200-300 mm along the crests of the waves of the underlying sheet. Directly at the junctions, they are fixed with self-tapping screws with press washers.

    Valley laying
    Valley laying

    The valley strips are laid with an overlap of 150 mm and fixed with roofing screws

  4. Similarly, the valley is mounted across the waves of ondulin, starting from the inner corner of the wall of the house.
  5. A multi-purpose filler is placed in the gap between the valley and the ondulin, and the overlaps and joints of the valleys are sealed with self-adhesive tape, pressing it against the walls with metal slats.

The ondulin is laid with a side abutment in the same way, only without laying the valley across the ondulin waves.

Installation of additional elements

When arranging an ondulin roof, you yourself need to know how the main additional roofing elements are mounted:

  1. Passage elements for ondulin are used in the places where chimney and ventilation pipes are output. They are installed on sheets of covering material laid around, and the lower part is fixed with self-tapping screws to the crate along each ridge.

    Roof pass-through
    Roof pass-through

    Passage elements are used in the places of passage through the roof of smoke and ventilation ducts

  2. Gabled elements for ondulin serve for decorative design and protection against leakage of the roof ribs. They can be made independently from ondulin, since it is a flexible material. The protruding part is folded over and fixed on self-tapping screws to the wind bar. But this can be done only when the outside temperature is above zero. Otherwise, it is recommended to use ready-made gable elements, which are mounted on the roof with an overlap of 15 cm, using 12 self-tapping screws per element.

    Ondulin gable elements
    Ondulin gable elements

    Usually gable elements are taken to match the roofing, but the latest fashion trends suggest the use of tongs that are different in color with the main roofing material, which gives originality and emphasizes the geometry of the roof

  3. The ridge elements for ondulin are installed when laying the ridge ridge after the installation of the entire covering flooring. They are fixed with a mandatory ventilation gap, starting from the side opposite to the wind flow. They are used for fastening nails or self-tapping screws, driving (screwing) them into each crest of the wave of the main covering material.

The ondulin roof is equipped with ventilation pipes, the base of which has the profile of the main covering material. This makes it possible to simplify installation and to extremely seal the passage units.

The passage element is mounted in the following way:

  1. Lay the coating sheets to the pipe exit.
  2. Install the passage element with an end overlap of 17 cm.
  3. They are recorded for each wave in addition to the extreme ones.

Installation of an ondulin ridge

The roof ridge is one of the elements of the system, installed on the ridges of the roof and its breaks. It provides ventilation of the roof space and protects it from moisture ingress. It is very simple to install a ridge on a roof made of ondulin:

  1. Parallel to the ridge in the upper parts of the slopes, 2 bars are laid on both sides. They will be the basis for attaching the skate.

The drainage system is an integral part of the roofing structure of the house. Its absence will lead to wetting of the walls, destruction of the basement and foundation. Therefore, immediately after laying the ondulin, you need to start arranging the drain. The dimensions of the gutters and downpipes depend on the area of the slopes:

  • for an area of 60–100 m², gutters Ø 11.5 cm and pipes Ø 8.7 cm are required;
  • for a roof of 80–130 m², gutters Ø 12.5 cm and pipes Ø 11 cm are required;
  • with a slope area of 120-200 m², gutters with a diameter of 15 cm and two pipes with a diameter of 8.7 cm are installed;
  • for an area of 160–220 m², you will have to buy gutters with a diameter of 15 cm and two downpipes with a diameter of 11 cm.
  1. The gutter holders are fixed on the frontal board in such a way that the eaves overlap by ⅓ the diameter of the gutter.

    Depending on the roof design, the gutter brackets are attached to the frontal board or directly to the lathing

  2. Begin the installation of the brackets from the farthest from the drainpipe. The outer edge of the gutter should be 1–2 cm below the slope line. For this, a wooden meter rail is laid, which will mark the slope line and, when mounting the brackets, are oriented along it.
  3. The second is to mount the bracket at the downpipe itself. He will determine the angle of inclination - on average 3-5 mm for each meter of running gutters.
  4. Measure the distance between the first and second brackets and mark the attachment points for the remaining brackets, observing the slope (30-50 mm per 10 running meters of the gutters).
  5. The cord is pulled and the rest of the holders are mounted strictly along it in the designated places.
  6. Collect and install all the links of the drainage system.

    Gutters must be installed so that the roof slope overlaps them by 1/3 of the diameter

Ondulin, like any other building material, raises a lot of questions and disputes. Moreover, quite often you can hear completely opposite opinions. Someone's ondulin lost its presentation after 2-3 years, and some are happy for decades. Here it is just one thing to say - make sure the installation is correct and follow the simple operating instructions. And then the ondulin roof will last for decades, retaining its beauty and strength characteristics.
